  In The Minute Book of the War Committee of the Covenanters in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright in the years and Thomas Hutton of Arkland is recorded as representing the parish of Kelton on the Committee, a period which includes the siege of . Threave Gardens lies just to the south west of Castle Douglas and is clearly signposted off the B as it makes its way into the town from the A75 bypass. The gardens were originally established alongside Threave House, built in on rising land to the east of the valley of the River Dee and commanding excellent views west to the hills of Galloway.

  The lands around Threave castle were grange lands, growing oats and barley to feed the occupants of the castle. Carlingwark, Blackpark and Whitepark were named by Scots speakers planted around Threave by Archibald and the Douglas lords of Galloway. At the same time, as I explain in my part of the book, Castle Douglas is a small, rural. Threave is a superb castle to visit, from the walk between fields to get to the boat where you see Red Kites, to the crossing itself over to the island where the castle sits. If it's a good day, you can enjoy a picnic as the grounds are grassy and wonderful. The castle itself is spectacular, inside and out.

Threave Castle car park is well signed from the roundabout on the A75 just west of Castle Douglas. The parking area is at the end of the tarmac drive, near the fine white farmhouse. This route makes a good combination with the Threave Castle circuit which starts from this same car park. For the Estate circular, however, head back along the road.
